What have we been working on, linked to our Understanding the World Curriculum?

2024-2025

Targets from School Development Plan:

To promote the use of ICT as a cross curricular resource, including:

  • To complete a full audit of the skills and focus on how these could be implemented in a cross curricular way
  • To explore what ICT equipment we have and its condition

Progress towards targets:

  • The subject leader for UW has moved on to a new school.
  • The Headteacher is currently covering this area of the curriculum.
  • To support its development, the Headteacher has completed a full curriculum review, alongside the research review ‘The best start to life’.  It has become evident that ‘The natural World’ is not in the LTP or MTP for the school and this could be an added factor to the lack of focus, or sustained focus, in the garden.
  • The Headteacher, has therefore, gone right back to basics with the UW curriculum, looking at breaking it down into three areas of UW, rather than separate subjects.
  • An initial plan will roll out with Otter Class in January 2024, and the UW target will alter accordingly.
  • For the initial target with ICT; the Headteacher is working with the ICT technician to complete a full audit of resources and develop a long term plan.
  • This will include adding opportunities for ICT to MTP’s, as well as to the LO group planner, so that staff are thinking carefully about where ICT would help promote, or enhance, learning.
  • Where this is the case – a clear focus on the skills in ICT that are being taught, will be added to the plan.  These targets will run in partnership with each other, as part of the UW subject leader action plan.

Review the target for UW and ensure a full curriculum review takes place, with a clear focus on the three elements of UW in MTP’s (The Natural World, Past and Present and People and Communities)

  • The subject lead for UW has completed a full audit of the ICT resources that are in the school, as well as whether they are working or not.
  • Research has been completed on the screen time of the average 2-3 year old and the processes we use for ICT – this will be reviewed further to explore use of ICT (is it teaching ICT skills or a resource and if it is a resource is it the best resource – does it need to be an ICT resource) – particularly for 2 year olds.
  • The subject leader has reviewed the ‘best start to life’ document, linked to developing the understanding the world curriculum.
  • A staff training linked to past skills and gaps in learning has been created and delivered, with each class team looking at possible skills to focus on each term, moving forward.
  • This has then been used to develop draft LTP and MTP’s.
  • A full review of the work carried out this year has been completed by the subject leader (HT), alongside the Deputy Headteacher.
  • Learning walks for the subject leader to understanding how the new curriculum is accessed, both indoors and outside have been planned for the summer term.
  • An initial action plan has been developed to include outcomes from findings of child’s voice, planning reviews, formal observations, data analysis and information from parents.
