Our History

Our History

The school was initially built to support mothers with childcare, whilst they maintained the war efforts in Luton, at the time of the Second World War.

Luton's Education Committee met in 1938 and confirmed the need for a new nursery school, with the plans for the new building being signed off on 18th July 1938.

The school cost £7590 to build and opened its door on 19th October 1939.

Special Visitors

In 1942, The Duke and Duchess of Rutland visited the school.  Their daughter was sad to see the lack of toys and play opportunity that the children had in the school; she donated her rocking horse to the school, so the children could have enjoyment.  This rocking horse is still in the school today (Old Faithful), despite being stolen, and found in pieces in the allotment next to the school.

The parents raised the money for Old Faithful to be refurbished and returned to the children of Hart Hill Nursery School.

War Shelter

There are stories and 'tellings' of an old air raid shelter on the school grounds - in the woodland walk.  We have contacted the LA to see if their records show this and the history behind it.
